Works listed alphabetically by composer last name

Composer Brad Balliett

indigo bunting

Brad Balliett

Premiered in 2021 as part of my Room to Breathe project, this work for bassoon and piano explores an improvisatory sound based on bird calls such as Indigo Bunting, Field Sparrow and House Wren. As Balliett directs: "Traditional beauty of sound should often be eclipsed by expression."

Composer David Biedenbender

Between Worlds

David Biedenbender

Premiered in 2025 through a consortium of 25 bassoonists led by myself, each of the three movements explores the idea of a liminal space—the space between things. From waking and sleeping, instrument's tracing each other, and time being bent and refracted.

Composer Chris Evan Hass

dueling realities

Chris Evan Hass

Premiered in 2021 as part of my Room to Breathe project. Chris himself details: "Dueling Realities is a story about the conflicting, yet omnipresent, states of the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic...The piece explores these incompatible frameworks through an interplay of two unique styles."

Composer Gala Flagello

mother time, father nature

Gala Flagello

Premiered in 2021 as part of my Room to Breathe project, this work was brought to life through a consortium of 8 bassoonists. Gala explores the inversion of the gender binary myth: "Mother Time is shifting, flexible, and gentle...Father Nature is relentless flowering, a continual force".

Composer Amanda Harberg

impulsive nature

Amanda Harberg

Premiered in 2025 by William Short and Katie Jordan, and a consortium of over 100 musicians (including me!) for bassoon, horn & piano. "journey into a world inspired by nature- often playful, sometimes mystical, primal, and sometimes celebratory lively interaction between the three instruments"

Composer Cindi Hsu

Metamorphosis

Cindi Hsu

Premiered in 2023 by Javier Rodriguez and Sean Fredenburg aka Post-Haste Reed Duo. Cindi details: "Each of the four movements represent stages of transformation.  The music is designed to actively change and evolve, mirroring the journey of personal “metamorphosis”.

Composer Brian Raphael Nabors

Swift

Brian Raphael Nabors

Premiered in 2021 as part of my Room to Breathe project. Brian sought to write "a workout for both bassoon and piano, working the ranges of both instruments". He definitely achieved this goal! The work is a rush of colors and notes start to finish. And by the way, the title was HIS idea ;)

Composer Logan Rutledge

Word salad

Logan Rutledge

Web premiered in 2023, this bombastic work for bassoon and piano is a great challenge for both players and ensemble! I highly recommend giving it a try, its difficult but very rewarding! Rutledge writes: "Word Salad is defined by Merriam-Webster as 'a jumble of extremely incoherent speech.' "

Composer Karalyn Schubring

i.c.u.

Karalyn Schubring

Premiered in 2021 as part of my Room to Breathe project. Karalyn wrote one of the more lyrical and tender additions to the bassoon's repertoire. She states: "In "i. C. u.”, the bassoon sings a song from the heart, expressing internal grief that grows into an outcry."

Composer Nicky Sohn

only in yosemite

Nicky Sohn

With the world premiere forthcoming in September 2026, this new work for bassoon and piano captures the imaginative style of the composer perfectly. Nicky sought to capture "a spirit of adventure and an openness to surprise" in her writing. Be sure to tune in for the premiere! Check the blog for info.

Composer Roger Zare

conspiracy theory

Roger Zare

Web premiered in 2023, this work paints a mysterious texture as the player navigates throughout. This work was later expanded to low reed and wind ensemble! Roger shares: "This piece is about the propagation of conspiracy theories and the obsession that many hold towards them."

~Many more to come in the future!
