Spotlight Series Recital

I'm thrilled to present a FANTASTIC program of works written entirely by American composers, primarily comprised of chamber music, including the WORLD PREMIERE of an original work for bassoon and piano by composer Nicky Sohn Only in Yosemite.

About the program

I've always loved performing chamber music, and especially in non-traditional configurations. This program demonstrates the multitudes that bassoon can present from a solo and chamber music perspective, from the athletic and weaving interplay in Cindi Hsu's Metamorphosis to the extreme "stratosphere" singing in Amanda Harberg's Impulsive Nature, the program begins with two strong and challenging trios.

After a short intermission, I'm so thrilled to be able to give the world premiere of Nicky Sohn's Only in Yosemite for bassoon and piano. Nicky's writing is fully of life and pulls a beautifully playful and virtuosic color from the instrument. All three of these works were consortiums that I was a part of, on Nicky's I served as co-director alongside Julianne Mulvey of the Minnesota Orchestra. I think it's incredible to put together such a cohesive and inspiring program of new works that I've played a small part in bringing to life in the past 3 years alongside countless other wonderful bassoonists on the consortium rosters for these works.

As I put this program together with these three works as my starting point, I felt it wrapped up perfectly involving my dear friends in the Continuum Wind Quintet and a work close to our hearts; Valerie Coleman's Tzigane for wind quintet. This ensemble and composition have been so important to my musical life, and I'm incredilbly excited to conclude this wonderful program with yet another fantastic chamber work. I hope you enjoy this Spotlight Series performance, thank you so much to Rowan Unviersity for allowing me to perform these works in a highlighted performance!
